donation will be requested at the door. 5/7/09-5/10-09 (Thurs. thru Sun.) -- PARKFIELD, 11th annual Parkfield Bluegrass Festival is one of only two 4-day bluegrass festivals held in California. Stage line-up features over a dozen great national, regional and local bands, including The Special Consensus, John Reischman & Jaybirds, Sawmill Road, Chris Stuart & Backcountry, Kathy Kallick Band, LeRoy McNees & Bluegrass Gospel Band, Whiskey Chimp, Sidesaddle, Bean Creek, Kitchen Help, Dalton Mt. Canon Perdido, something for those who cant make the opening day of our Parkfield Festival: the matchless bluegrass trio of Bluegrass Etc. is joined by renown fiddlin virtuoso Byron Berline for a concert beginning at 8:00 PM. Cost is $18 in advance, $20 at the door a real bargain, considering the national prominence of these performers. Tickets available at S. Barb. SANTA MONICA, concert at McCabes Guitar Shop, 3101 Pico Blvd., means you neednt despair if you cant escape the big city to attend our Parkfield gala. Show features Byron Berline and Bluegrass Etc., names very familiar to bluegrass aficionados -- starts at 8:00 PM, cost is $20. 5/15/09 (Fri.) CLOVIS, the 2nd annual Bluegrass in the Park concert series begins, at 902 Fifth St., Clovis. Its held in the Clovis Veterans Memorial Park, with lots of shady grass on which to sit. Bring a blanket or a chair, and a picnic meal. Music starts about 6:30 PM, and continues for a couple hours. Thanks to all bands generously donating their time, its FREE -- however, contributions in the performing bands tip jar would be greatly appreciated. May 15 concert features the Grasskickers. 5/16/09 (Sat.) BAKERSFIELD, at 7:00 PM, an Arts Council House Concert, with the Nathan McCuen Trio and bluegrass mandolin wizard Scott Gates. LOS OLIVOS, Peter Feldmann & the Very Lonesome Boys will appeaar at the S.Y. Valley Grange Hall, 2374 Alamo Pintado Avenue. Tickets, at $12.00, available on-line at http://www.bluegrasswest.com/tickets.htm and at the Book Loft in Solvang, CA. Tickets go on sale April 10th. Fine bluegrass from a noted group of Southern California pickers. 5/17/09 (Sun.) AGOURA HILLS, the 49th annual Topanga Banjo-Fiddle Contest will be held at Paramount Ranch, from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. A wide spectrum of musicians will perform, including Central Coast favorites like Peter Feldmann, with his old-time Mothers Boys band, and Whiskey Chimp, septet that will play at Parkfield again this year. TARZANA, at 4001 Reseda Blvd., Braemar Country Clubs regular 3rd-Tuesday-of-the-month free bluegrass concert features Murphys Law. GRASS VALLEY, 34th annual Fathers Day Weekend Bluegrass Festival, the states only 4-day bluegrass fest outside of Parkfield. Terrific line-up includes last years Parkfield headliner band, Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice, along with The Grascals, Dailey & Vincent, Claire Lynch Band, Danny Paisley & Southern Grass, Bill Clifton, the Steeldrivers, the Bluegrass Brothers, Chris Stuart & Backcountry, and the Stairwell Sisters. For more info see www.cbaontheweb.org, or call (805) 349-8397. 6/19/09 6/21/09 (Fri. thru Sun.) VICTORVILLE, at Mojave Narrows Regional Park, 18000 Yates Rd., the annual Huck Finn Jubilee. This 3-day country & bluegrass music festival features a strong line-up: Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder, The Grascals, Dailey & Vincent, Lonesome River Band, and several more. CONTINUING LOCAL JAMS & GIGS: ARROYO GRANDE: 2nd Sunday afternoon, from 3 6 PM, the Dusty Shoes Gospel Band plays bluegrass at the SLO Down Pub, 1200 E. Grand Ave. No cover charge. ARROYO GRANDE: 3rd Sunday evening jams, 5:30 -- 8:30 PM at SLO Down Pub, 1200 E. Grand Ave. Note that pickers and singers of all levels are welcome, as are grinners! The last few months several folks have met at 4:30 PM for dinner across the street, at the Golden Moon Chinese Restaurant, 1165 E. All bluegrass fans are welcome, pickers and grinners alike. Note that these jams are geared to beginners, and they play from a set list of songs. BAKERSFIELD: first Monday evening, an open jam at Rusty's Pizza 5430 Olive Drive (in the Vons center), from 6:00 - 9:00 PM. Jam averages 10 to 12 pickers, most instruments are represented. BAKERSFIELD: every Sa turday, at Dagney's Coffee Shop.The jam will start at 2:00 p.m. and run to 5:00 or so. GROVER BEACH: every Saturday, from 5 7 PM, the Dusty Shoes Gospel Band plays bluegrass at the Station Grill, 170 W. Grand Ave., just east of the AMTRAK station. Aside from the bands delectable sounds, the Grill serves up a scrumptious burger special during this concert. Plus, theres no cover charge! LOMPOC: 2nd and 4th Wednesday evening jams, 7:00 - 9:00 PM at Southside Coffee Co., 105 So. "H" St. -- for more info call Bill at (805) 736-8241. NIPOMO/SANTA MARIA: 1st Sunday gig, 2:00 -- 4:00 PM, with Wild River Ramblers, at Santa Maria Brewing Co., 112 Cuyama Ln., Nipomo -- just a block west of Hwy 101's Bakersfield exit to Hwy 166. SANTA BARBARA: monthly jam at Tucker's Grove County Park, 2nd Sunday, starting at 12 noon until whenever.... The park is accessed by taking Turnpike exit east (toward mountains) off of Hwy 101; entering park where Turnpike meets Cathedral Oaks; and continuing to the right until reaching Kiwanis Meadow (some nine speed bumps from park entrance).
